Speech by SCED at opening ceremony of DETOUR 2015 (English only)
***********************************************************

Following is the speech by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, at the opening ceremony of DETOUR 2015 today (November 27):

Victor (Executive Director of PMQ, Mr Victor Tsang), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good afternoon. I am most delighted to join you all today for the opening of DETOUR 2015.

DETOUR has over the years become one of the most significant events in Hong Kong's design calendar. It has successfully built a brand which the community finds interesting, particularly in its bold and daring use of historic sites, and the passion and energy that it radiates through the young participants.

DETOUR 2015 will once again bring us inspiration and excitement. I am glad to know that many spectacular activities have been lined up in this 10-day creative extravaganza. These include cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary exhibitions, stage programmes, workshops, seminars, pop-up stores and satellite events all over the city. DETOUR 2015 is a fun way to experience the vibrancy and creativity of our city. It is also an ideal platform to connect to and engage with the design sector, which is one of the fastest-growing sectors of our economy.

The theme for this year is "Connection". It is about connecting the artists and the public, connecting the past and the future, and connecting the old and the new. These connections aim to build a network of creative clusters and invite talented artists to explore new landscapes and new opportunities.

The Government is of course part of the connection as well. We have always been committed to promoting Hong Kong as a creative city. We support events which contribute to generating demand for innovation and fostering a creative atmosphere. DETOUR celebrates the creative aspects of our city and creates a unique platform for designers, artists and the general public to exchange innovative ideas in a dynamic way. It is indeed most worthy of our support.

I would like to thank PMQ for hosting this inspiring event again this year. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Hong Kong Design Centre for their dedication and contribution in making the event a success.

DETOUR 2015 is an event for all ages to experience, to connect, and to learn about the forefront of local and international design. I wish you would all enjoy the creative journey that DETOUR brings this year.

     Thank you very much.
