Company's director convicted of wage offences
*********************************************

Asia Television Limited (ATV) and its director concerned were prosecuted by the Labour Department for committing wage offences under the Employment Ordinance. ATV had pleaded guilty earlier to the 102 summonses laid against it in respect of the wage offences and was fined $1.07 million. The director concerned was convicted of 100 summonses today (November 27) at the District Court. The case was adjourned for sentencing on December 2.

The company failed to pay wages within seven days after the end of wage periods and to pay wages to employees within seven days after the termination of employment as required by the ordinance. The director concerned was convicted after trial for his consent, connivance or neglect in the offences.

The judgment clearly shows that the Government does not tolerate any exploitation of employees' statutory rights and will spare no effort to combat offences related to payment of wages. The Government will bring employers and responsible persons of limited companies in contravention of the law to justice.

"It helps disseminate a strong message to all employers that failure to effect payment of wages as required by the law is a serious offence and they should comply with the law. The Government will continue to make dedicated efforts in protecting the statutory rights of employees," a spokesman for the Labour Department said.
