Hong Kong action movies are in the spotlight at the Festival des 3 Continents (Festival of the 3 Continents) taking place in the French city of Nantes from November 24 to December 1.

Founded in 1979, the Festival des 3 Continents screens feature films, both fiction and documentaries, from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Credited with revealing major directors like Wong Kar-wai to the French public and attended by an audience of 26 000, the Festival attracts considerable media coverage and is followed with interest by members of the film industry.

Kung-fu fighters and cult movies are providing excitement in the Festival's "Hong Kong Connection" programme, which comprises Chang Cheh's "One-Armed Swordsman", Lo Wei's "Fist of Fury", Yuen Woo-ping's "Drunken Master", Johnny Mak's "Long Arm of the Law", Tsui Hark's "Once Upon a Time in China" and Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's "Infernal Affairs".

Speaking at a reception before a screening of Lo Wei's 1972 classic "Fist of Fury" starring Bruce Lee, the Deputy Representative of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels, Miss Drew Lai, said that the Office was delighted to support the Festival for the first time. She told guests that Hong Kong, with its Chinese roots and many rich influences from the West and beyond, is a place with free speech and a free flow of ideas, and where creativity and diversity are encouraged.

She also seized the opportunity to recommend the major exhibition of Bruce Lee's life and work being held at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum until 2018.
