Distinguished Chinese Scientists Lecture Series 2015 held at Science Museum (with photos)

     The Distinguished Chinese Scientists Lecture Series 2015 was held today (November 27) at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum. Distinguished Chinese scientists were invited to speak on their work in their respective fields and on the prospects for future technological development.

     Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, noted that Chinese scientists have been playing a key role in promoting advanced technology and making remarkable achievements in various research areas. After gaining outstanding accomplishments in the research of therapy against malaria, Ms Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine last month, reflecting the recognition of Chinese scientists' contributions to science worldwide.

     Ms Hui added that participants could gain an in-depth understanding of the lecture topics through the lectures, and be able to appreciate the speakers' perseverance and untiring spirit in research.

     Other officiating guests included the Deputy Director of the Department of International Affairs at the China Association for Science and Technology, Mr Chen Jian; the Division Director of the Department of Educational Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Ye Shuiqiu; Deputy Director of the Beijing Institutes of Life Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor George Gao; the Dean of the School of Science and Technology at the Open University of Hong Kong, Professor Ho Kin-chung; Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Zhejiang University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Tan Jianrong; Professor Chu Ming-chung from the Department of Physics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; the Vice-President of the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre, Mr Kwok Ming-wa; and the Museum Director of the Hong Kong Science Museum, Ms Karen Sit.

     The lectures were jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the China Association for Science and Technology, the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre and the China Association (HK) for Science and Society Ltd.

     The event consisted of three lectures, namely "Global Trends in Emerging Infectious Diseases - Control and Prevention" by Professor Gao, "How Climate Change Affects the Scientific Research in the Polar Regions" by Professor Ho and "The Use of Digital Design and Intelligent Manufacturing in Large Scale Machinery" by Professor Tan, with Professor Chu as the moderator of each lecture.

     Since 2003, more than 50 well-known Chinese scientists have been invited to the Distinguished Chinese Scientists Lecture Series to give lectures on various topics, sharing the latest technological advancements with the public, and encouraging young people to participate in scientific research.
