Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra to present annual concert "Hero"
************************************************************

The Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (HKYCO) of the Music Office under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold its annual concert, entitled "Hero", at 3pm on December 20 (Sunday) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. The programme will present a variety of renowned Chinese music pieces.

The annual concert will be conducted by Tsui Ying-fai and Kwok Kin-ming. The orchestra and guest piano soloist Colleen Lee will perform "Piano Concerto No. 3 Hero" composed by Kuan Naichung. Adapted from the famous Chinese tune "All Red the River", the piano concerto is infused with Western Late Romanticism and showcases the composer's artistic virtuosity across Eastern and Western styles. The work is a not-to-be-missed piano concerto arrangement for Chinese orchestra.

The repertoire also includes Liu Chihsuan's "Revisiting 1960", inspired by the dizi solo piece "Spring Dawn at Yang-Ming Mountain"; renditions by Yan Huichang and Zhu Jianer of Liu Tianhua's erhu works "A Beautiful Night" and "Marching to the Promising Future" respectively; Liu Wenjin and Li Minxiong's arrangement of the Zhejiang Music and Dance Troupe's "Triumphal Song of the Fishing Fleet"; Wang Danhong's "The Clouds, the Mountains and the Distant Geese", adapted from the Chaozhou guzheng piece "Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute"; and Peng Xiuwen's rendition of the ancient work "The General's Command".

Established in 1978, the HKYCO has around 90 members. The orchestra has taken part in numerous local performances and major festivals, and has received high acclaim for its performances on overseas tours. Guest piano soloist Colleen Lee is a laureate of several major competitions, including the 15th International Chopin Piano Competition, the 16th Santander International Piano Competition and the Gina Bachauer International Artist Competition. She has also collaborated with various renowned orchestras and has performed extensively around the world.
