Anti-drug parental programme launched (with photos)
***************************************************

About 100 parents took action in support of the anti-drug cause by attending the opening ceremony of the Star Parents Programme 2015-16 today (November 19), and pledged to help their children resist the temptations of drugs.

To enhance parents' awareness of the youth drug abuse problem, the Narcotics Division of the Security Bureau (ND), the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) and Radio 5 of Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK-5) again joined in co-organising this year's Star Parents Programme. Through targeted activities the programme aims to better equip parents with drug knowledge and enhance their skills in handling drug abuse problems so as to help their children stay away from drugs.

Officiating at the opening ceremony today, the Chairman of the ACAN Sub-committee on Preventive Education and Publicity, Dr Tik Chi-yuen, reiterated that, with drug abuse becoming more hidden, early identification of those with drug problems as well as intervention to provide them with suitable assistance are of paramount importance. Anti-drug preventive education should start at home. Since the family is the first line of defence against youth drug abuse, support for parental education needs urgent attention and should be further strengthened, he said.

Also officiating at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Narcotics, Mrs Erika Hui, said that the Star Parents Programme, which was co-organised with RTHK-5 for the first time last year, was well received by the community. Some participating parents added that, through the programme, their anti-drug awareness and knowledge were enhanced while the relationship between them and their children had also improved. They considered the Programme helpful in guiding their children and preventing them from abusing drugs.

Mrs Hui said that drawing on the positive response last year, the ND and the ACAN have again partnered with RTHK-5 to encourage more parents to join this year's Star Parent Programme. She urged parents to further strengthen their communication skills with children and create a caring and harmonious family for them. These were essential aspects which would help youths resist drugs.

The Principal of Christian Zheng Sheng College, Dr Alman Chan, and clinical psychologist Ms Sarah Ip also attended the ceremony to share their views on how to communicate effectively with young people, and on parenting and family issues faced by parents. The Head of the Chinese Programme Service of RTHK, Mr Fung Wai-tong, and artistes Phil Lam and Mischa Ip also participated at the opening ceremony.

A series of activities under the Star Parents Programme 2015-16 will be launched after today's opening ceremony. A radio drama series with 24 episodes featuring family, children and drugs issues based on real stories will be broadcast from November 2015 to October 2016 on the RTHK-5 radio programme "Stand by me". As part of the radio programme, professionals will be invited to discussion sessions to share their views on how to deal with parenting and drug abuse problems featured in the drama. In addition, to enhance parents' communication skills with children, three workshops targeting parents will be organised in March, June and September 2016 at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Drug InfoCentre at the Queensway Government Offices, where experts will be invited to give talks on different topics.
