Welcome home ceremony for HKSAR delegation to 1st National Youth Games (with photos)

     The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) delegation won four medals at the 1st National Youth Games (NYG) comprising one gold, one silver and two bronzes. The HKSAR Government hosted a welcome home ceremony this evening (November 18) to celebrate their triumphant return.

     Speaking at the ceremony, the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, commended the HKSAR delegation for performing so well. She noted that they had won medals and entered the final eight in a number of events despite fierce competition from top notch athletes. The Hong Kong athletes had demonstrated their energy and efforts in fighting for their goals with passion, and Hong Kong people were proud of their strong determination and sportsmanship, she said.

     Ms Hui added that the Government will continue to allocate more resources for the national sports associations so as to offer young athletes systematic programmes.

     The 1st NYG was held from October 18 to 27 in Fuzhou. Hong Kong sent 214 athletes to participate in final competitions in 20 sports, namely swimming, athletics, archery, badminton, canoeing, cycling, fencing, women's U18 football, gymnastics, women's handball, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, taekwondo, tennis, beach volleyball, volleyball (women's U17, men's U19 and men's U17), windsurfing and wushu (taolu).

     Both the gold (cycling: men's individual road race event) and silver (cycling: men's omnium event) medals were won by Leung Ka-yu. The bronze medals were won by Venia Yeung with Claudia Ng (tennis: women's doubles), and Ng Tsz-yau with Yeung Nga-ting (badminton: women's doubles).

     In addition, the delegation members came fourth in four events and from fifth to eighth in 14 events. Six athletes in athletics and nine in swimming broke their individual records at the NYG.

     The welcome home ceremony was held at the Arcade of Kowloon Park. Chairman of the Organising Committee of the HKSAR Delegation, Mr Timothy Fok, and the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li, also officiated at the ceremony. The officiating guests presented commendation certificates to the athletes who achieved outstanding results at the 1st NYG.
