"Bands around the World" by Hong Kong Professional Winds to offer musical journey (with photos)

     In an imaginative musical journey prepared by eminent conductor Dr Yip Wai-hong, the Hong Kong Professional Winds will collaborate with pianist Jacky Wong to travel through a kaleidoscope of different cultures, performing inspiring classical works under the baton of Kelvin Ngai.

     The concert "Bands around the World" will be staged on November 14 to conjure up scenes and sounds from expansive Africa, mystical India, spectacular America, romantic Europe and the awe-inspiring landscape of Scotland.

     The programme includes Yoder/Walters' "Bands around the World", McCoy's "African Symphony", Rimsky-Korsakov's "Song of India", the second and fourth movements of Dvorˆhk's symphony "From the New World", Arnold's "Four Scottish Dances" and Schwarz's "Around the World in Eighty Days". In addition, Jacky Wong will perform the first movement of Beethoven's concerto "Emperor" as conductor and piano soloist in the concert.

     Music director Dr Yip Wai-hong is a veteran composer, conductor and educator. The Hong Kong Professional Winds, founded by Dr Yip in 2013, is the city's first full-time ensemble of its kind. Previous collaborations have included performances with acclaimed pianist Shen Wenyu and violinist Li Chuanyun.

     "Bands around the World" is one of the programmes of the World Cultures Festival 2015 - A Decade of Exquisite Arts. It will be held at 8pm on November 14 at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium.

     Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the World Cultures Festival 2015 - A Decade of Exquisite Arts is running from October 16 to November 15, featuring an array of artistic gems representing rich and diverse cultures from around the globe, in celebration of the festival's 10th anniversary.
