To arouse public interest in horticulture and to enhance awareness of greening, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold a horticulture education exhibition entitled "Interesting Foliage Plants" on November 7 and 8 (Saturday and Sunday) from 10am to 4pm at the Arcade of Kowloon Park. Admission is free.
Foliage plants are plants that are appreciated primarily for their leaves. While their flowers are generally inconspicuous, the visual appeal of these plants lies in the shape, arrangement, colour and veining of the leaves. Examples include elephant's ear plants, staghorn ferns, the elephant's foot and air plants. Some foliage plants, such as pitcher plants and the sweet gum, feature modified leaves or seasonal colour changes. They all have great ornamental value.
Foliage plants are useful in many ways. Multi-coloured or uniquely shaped ones can be used in garden landscaping to complement flowering plants. Shade-tolerant ones can brighten up dim corners of the garden when grown under the shade of trees, and can serve greening and decorative purposes when planted indoors. Trees with autumn foliage, commonly planted in parks or along roadsides, offer seasonal appeal with their attractive features. Vines with autumn foliage, when covering walls of buildings, enhance the landscape with colour changes of leaves.
Foliage plants can also help improve the environment by lowering air temperature, regulating air humidity, purifying air and reducing noise.
Descriptive display panels will enable members of the public to learn more about the characteristics, propagation methods and functions of foliage plants.
Game stalls will be open during the exhibition at the Kowloon Park Arcade. Visitors will also be able to share the fun of pot planting under the guidance of horticulture instructors.
Two talks in Cantonese will be held at the Secondary Hall of Kowloon Park Sports Centre. Admission tickets are required.
