Asian Ethnic Cultural Performances 2015 to be staged at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza this Sunday (with photos)
************************************************************

Asian Ethnic Cultural Performances 2015 will be staged this Sunday (November 1) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza from 2.30pm to 6.30pm. Entertainment programmes will include a costume parade, ethnic performances and various fringe activities. Admission is free.

This year the event has a record of 16 participating places including Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. Together with local and Macau performing groups, the event aims to demonstrate the splendid diversity of Asian cultures.

Highlights include a traditional aboriginal corroboree dance and music performances by Jaran Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance Company (Jaran) from Australia. For its debut performance in Hong Kong, Jaran will also play a special aboriginal musical instrument - the didjeridoo - which is the oldest woodwind instrument in the world. Many of Jaran's dances tell stories of aboriginal people that have been passed from generation to generation.

Dhoad Gypsies from Rajasthan in India will perform exhilarating Rajasthani music and dance. Rajasthani music is renowned for its rapid, complex rhythms and heart-touching themes, ranging from romance and nostalgia to joyous celebrations of life. Dhoad Gypsies from Rajasthan also add a theatrical twist to their melodic mix combining tabla, dholak, harmonium and other traditional instruments, as well as performing special Fakir feats.

There will also be traditional and ethnic performances from other Asian regions including Korean samul nori percussion music, Vietnamese cone hat and paper fan dances, Japanese kendo performances and more. Members of the public can also enjoy fringe activities including regional arts and crafts displays, Brunei food demonstrations, plus an array of workshops such as Thai fruit carving, henna painting and some colourful traditional handicrafts.

Asian Ethnic Cultural Performances 2015, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is also an outdoor programme in support of the World Cultures Festival 2015 - A Decade of Exquisite Arts.
