Belgian trout eggs detected with veterinary drug residue
********************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (October 17) urged the public not to consume a kind of prepacked trout eggs manufactured in Belgium as the product concerned may contain veterinary drug residue, phenoxyethanol. The trade should also stop using or selling the product concerned immediately.

     Product details are as follows:

Product name: Trout Eggs
Manufacturer: Caspian Tradition
Place of origin: Belgium
Net Weight: 100 grams

"The Centre received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) of the European Commission that several batches of trout eggs manufactured in Belgium were detected by the French Authorities to contain phenoxyethanol, an anesthetic prohibited to be used on food fish by the European Union. According to the information provided by the RASFF, the manufacturer and the wholesaler concerned have initiated a recall of the affected product and a small volume of the affected product may have been imported into Hong Kong," a spokesman for the CFS said.

The CFS is contacting the importer concerned in Hong Kong as indicated in the notification of the RASFF, and will alert the trade to the incident. The trade should stop using or selling the affected product immediately should they have imported and still possess them.

The spokesman urged members of the public who had bought the affected product to immediately stop consumption. They should seek medical advice if they feel sick upon consumption of the product concerned.

The CFS will continue to follow up on the case and take appropriate action.
