Acclaimed Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili returns to thrill audiences (with photos)
******************************************************

Following the overwhelming response to its high-energy show in 2009, the Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili returns to Hong Kong this month to thrill spectators with its virtuosity. With the men's amazing point work and the women's graceful glides, the ethnic dance extravaganza is a remarkable display of Georgia's unique culture and charm.

Praised by The New York Times as "a folk gem with classical facets", the company's performances superbly combine contemporary elan with authentic folk roots. Its upcoming programme features different works with gorgeous choreography and fabulous costumes.

Speed, strength and agility come to the fore in exciting feats of dagger-throwing and sabre-wielding, reflecting the Georgian characteristics of daring and courage, while light-hearted scenes depict old customs in fresh ways as traders and artisans celebrate the joys of everyday life. Refined wedding traditions and high-society dances, including timeless classics such as the regal Samaia and romantic Qartuli, also take on a new appearance.

Founded by eminent dancers and husband-and-wife team Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili, the Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili has helped preserve and develop Georgian folk dancing over the past 70 years, establishing itself as a national treasure. It has been hailed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" overseas and has performed in more than 80 countries for over 50 million spectators. Third-generation family members Iliko Sukhishvili Jr and Nino Sukhishvili are now taking their grandparents' artistic vision forward, blending folk, classical and modern elements into their choreography and continuing to amaze audiences around the world.
