New World Construction Company Limited, Bing Lee Crane-Lorry Transportation Company Limited and K.W. Construction Engineering Company Limited were fined $30,000, $20,000 and $30,000 respectively at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts today (October 14) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear) Regulations. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on February 17 last year in Tsim Sha Tsui. A two-leg chain sling broke while being used to lift an I-beam structure by a mobile crane. A worker involved in the lifting operation was struck to death by the falling I-beam structure.
