Soul-searing tango to evoke Eva Perˆun's legendary life (with photos)
******************************

After two years in the making, Tango Buenos Aires will present an all-new production combining traditional tango with innovative new choreography in "The Song of Eva Perˆun" for Hong Kong audiences in mid-October.

With highly expressive dancers who use the sultry language of tango to reconstruct turning points in Eva Perˆun's rags-to-riches life in its short span of 33 years, the performance reveals the power and intensity of tango in capturing Argentinians' feelings towards the country's former First Lady, affectionately known as Evita.

The choreography ranges from newly invented to more traditional numbers, including a phenomenal rendition of a boleadoras folk dance. A live band and a vocalist add to the sizzling atmosphere, delivering original works and classics including Matos Rodrˆqguez's "La Cumparsita" and Astor Piazzolla's "Oblivion".

The Washington Post hailed the company for its "repeatedly crafted swirling, fast-paced tapestries of movement, laced with proud postures and sensual couplings".

"The Song of Eva Perˆun" is the opening programme of the World Cultures Festival - A Decade of Exquisite Arts. It will be held at 7.30pm from October 16 to 18 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC) Grand Theatre.

Tickets priced at $180, $280, $380 and $480 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities and their minders, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. Other booking discounts of up to 20 per cent are available.

In a special foyer performance, "Tantalising Tango", on October 17 from 3pm to 4pm at the HKCC foyer, members of Tango Buenos Aires will demonstrate some of their dance sequences while notable local tango pairs invited by the Hong Kong DanceSport Association will introduce characteristic moves of the dramatic South American dance. Critic Tang Ching-kin will also host a 30-minute pre-performance appreciation talk (in Cantonese), on the captivating pairing of Evita and emotive tango, that day at 7pm at the HKCC level 4 foyer.
