****************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hospital Authority (HA) today (October 8) announced that the lead level in the water samples collected in the paediatric wards and milk kitchens of United Christian Hospital (UCH) were within the acceptable range set out in the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO).

"Following the procedures advised by the Water Supplies Department, a total of 12 water samples were collected in UCH wards where there were long stay paediatric inpatients or day patients," the HA spokesman said.

"Water filters have been procured by the HA and are ready for installation in hospital premises if the lead levels in water samples are found to be above the acceptable level stipulated by WHO.

"According to the risk assessment on water safety by toxicology experts and related specialists, water tests at this stage should be conducted in hospital paediatric wards with young children under the age of 6. The HA will continue to arrange water tests in other public hospitals accordingly," the spokesman said.
