********************************************************

The Department of Health (DH) today (September 25) endorsed a licensed drug wholesaler, LSB (HK) Ltd, to recall one batch (batch number: 424801) of Korus-Atenolol 50 milligram tablets (registration number: HK-61254) from the market due to a quality issue.

Upon notification from the drug regulatory authority of Macau that the above batch manufactured in Korea has failed the dissolution test, the DH commenced investigations immediately and obtained a sample from LSB for analysis. The Government Laboratory confirmed today that the sample failed the dissolution test.

According to LSB, about 1 558 boxes of 100 tablets of the affected batch have been supplied to private doctors and pharmacies since April 2014. Currently, no other batches of the pharmaceutical product are available in Hong Kong.

"We have instructed LSB to follow up with the Korean drug manufacturer on the root cause of the quality issue and will closely monitor the recall," a spokesman for the DH said.

Korus-Atenolol 50mg tablets contain atenolol and are prescription medicine used for the treatment of hypertension.

So far, the DH has not received any adverse reports in connection with the concerned pharmaceutical product. LSB has set up a hotline (2418 0842) to answer related enquiries.

Members of the public who are in doubt after taking the pharmaceutical product should consult their healthcare professionals for advice.
