Cluster of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus cases in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital
************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) made the following announcement today (September 18):

     Three babies (one male and two female, aged 10 to 39 days) in the neonatal wards were confirmed to be carriers of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus without clinical symptoms since August 14. All of them have been discharged.

     The infection control team of PYNEH met with experts from the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection today and adopted the following enhanced infection control measures:

1. Continuously conduct surveillance of neonates;
2. All staff and visitors entering the designated cubicle have to wear personal protective equipment;
3. Enhance environmental cleaning and disinfection in the wards concerned; and
4. Enhance hand hygiene among visitors to prevent cross transmission.

     The hospital will enforce the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
