Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, at a media session on the Competition Ordinance and Asia Television Limited (ATV) after attending the opening ceremony of the "Compete With Integrity" roving exhibition today (September 18):
Reporter: Mr So, can you comment on whether the TV audience in Hong Kong can benefit from this competition law?
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development: I think the TV audience, including consumers overall, would benefit from competition law because competition law is really across all sectors. It's a cross-sectoral piece of legislation. So competition law of course will benefit the public at large. I think it's important for the public to understand what competition law is. The legislation, the Competition Ordinance, will be in full effect as of December 14, and this is the purpose of today's exhibition, to explain to the people of Hong Kong in a very creative way, I must say, through films and other publication materials, to help people understand exactly the content of the Competition Ordinance as well as how this will empower consumers in Hong Kong as well as businesses for a fair competitive environment.
Reporter: Can you update the audience on the transfer of shares of ATV?
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development: You are asking about the transfer of shareholding in ATV. This application has been lodged with the Communications Authority, which is now handling this application. So I think the question perhaps would be better put to the Communications Authority. I really cannot represent the Communications Authority. It would not be appropriate for me to answer the question on their behalf.
