Clean shorelines roving exhibition launched today
*************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Inter-departmental Working Group on Clean Shorelines:

To enhance public awareness of keeping the shorelines clean, the Inter-departmental Working Group on Clean Shorelines today (September 12) launched a four-month roving exhibition which will travel throughout Hong Kong's 18 districts. Part of the "Keep Clean 2015@Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign, the exhibition is aimed at educating the public on the sources of marine refuse and its impact on the environment, as well seeking their support in protecting Hong Kong's scenic shorelines and marine ecology.

According to a study report released by the Working Group in April this year, marine refuse is mainly the result of poor public awareness of keeping the shorelines clean. Over 80 per cent of the marine refuse collected originates from land-based sources, with shoreline and recreational activities being the predominant activity contributing to marine refuse. Excluding natural debris, more than 70 per cent comprises plastic and foam plastic items. Through public education, the Working Group hopes that members of the public can help reduce waste at source, avoid using disposable items and participate in source separation of waste when conducting coastal and recreational activities, so as to prevent the generation of marine refuse and adverse impacts on shoreline cleanliness.

The roving exhibition will feature details of the work of the Working Group and the study report on marine refuse, the damage it causes to the environment, improvement measures to tackle the marine refuse problem, and how the public can help in keeping the shorelines clean. In addition to information panels, a game booth will also be set up at the exhibition venues on Sundays with different types of marine refuse on display. The first stop of the roving exhibition is Clear Water Bay Second Beach in Sai Kung. Detailed information about the exhibition is as follows:
