Seminar on Research and Development of Chinese Medicines 2015 concludes successfully (with photos)

     The Seminar on Research and Development of Chinese Medicines 2015 held by the Committee on Research and Development of Chinese Medicines concluded successfully today (September 11).

     Co-organised by the Department of Health, the Hospital Authority and the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, the two-day seminar was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

     About 20 guest speakers gave presentations on various important Chinese medicine topics, including the regulations and registration of Chinese medicine products in the Hong Kong, Mainland and overseas markets; the quality, safety and new technologies of Chinese medicine; and the management of digestive diseases with Chinese and integrative medicine. More than 500 representatives from the government, industry, academic and research sectors in Chinese and Western medicine-related fields attended the seminar.

     The Chairperson of the Committee on Research and Development of Chinese Medicines and Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Ms Annie Choi; the Director of Health, Dr Constance Chan; and the Director (Cluster Services) of the Hospital Authority, Dr Cheung Wai-lun, delivered welcoming remarks.

     The Vice-Chancellor and President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Joseph Sung, was Guest of Honour and gave a keynote speech on "Research and clinical practice of integrative medicine in digestive diseases". In addition, Dr Cheung and the Director of the Center for East-West Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, Professor Hui Ka-kit, introduced the latest developments of integrative medicine for disease management in Hong Kong and the United States respectively.

     The Assistant Director (Traditional Chinese Medicine) of the Department of Health, Dr Ronald Lam; the Director of the Department of Drug and Cosmetics Registration at the China Food and Drug Administration, Dr Wang Hainan; and the Head of the Department of Complementary and Alternative Medicines and Traditional Medicinal Products at Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, Professor Werner Knöss, spoke on the latest regulations and registration of Chinese medicine products in Hong Kong, the Mainland and the European Union respectively. The Vice Dean of the College of Korean Medicine of Kyung Hee University, Professor Ko Seong-gyu, spoke on the Korean national strategy and research and development (R&D) for herbal medicinal products. Co-Director of the Center for Excellence in Nanomedicine and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, Professor Ratnesh Lal, also shared with the participants his research work of applying bio-nanotechnology in Chinese medicine. A number of experts and academics from Hong Kong and the Mainland were also invited to share their clinical experiences and research findings in the treatment of fatty liver, gastroesophageal reflux disease and lower gastrointestinal diseases from the Chinese and Western medicine perspectives.

     Established in December 2011, the Committee on Research and Development of Chinese Medicines aims to orchestrate the efforts of the government, industry, academic and research sectors in promoting the development of R&D and testing of Chinese medicines. Secretariat support for the Committee is provided by the Innovation and Technology Commission.
