The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, together with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Po Leung Kuk (PLK), Dr Pollyanna Chu, today (September 8) officiated at the launch ceremony of My Pledge Day 2015, "My Pledge to Act - Love Our Home and Clean Hong Kong" at PLK Riverain Primary School. About 800 students, including those from more than 30 schools under the PLK, participated in the ceremony.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Mr Ng said, "Moral and civic education is one of the four key tasks in the curriculum reform for achieving students' whole-person development. Since the 2003/04 academic year, the Education Bureau has encouraged schools to organise 'My Pledge to Act', aiming to continually help students, through collective commitment and a series of related activities, to set their personal goals, develop a healthy lifestyle and cultivate good character and civic awareness. The activity helps students to demonstrate positive behaviour and habits, enabling them to contribute to family, the community, the nation and the world."

The theme of "My Pledge to Act" this year is "Love Our Home and Clean Hong Kong", urging students to take note of personal hygiene and keep homes, schools, the community and the environment clean; practise healthy living; care for the community; and be responsible citizens. Mr Ng encouraged schools to adopt different themes every year, according to the latest social developments, in organising "My Pledge to Act" to promote moral and civic education. Schools are recommended to work out systematic and holistic plans for "My Pledge to Act" activities in which theme-based measures can be incorporated into school development plans, school-based curricula and diversified learning activities in accordance with the schools' missions and students' needs.

Over the years, "My Pledge to Act" has gained participation and support from secondary schools, primary schools and kindergartens. The schools have implemented "My Pledge to Act" and relevant activities in various ways, such as school-based opening ceremonies, weekly assemblies, class teacher periods, Personal Growth Education lessons and Life Education lessons, as well as subject-based, co-curricular or cross-curricular learning activities.
