*********************************************************

Following is the speech by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra 2015/16 Season Opening at Hong Kong Cultural Centre tonight (September 4):

Jack (So), John (Slosar), Mr Lin (Jingzhen) (representative of the Bank of China (Hong Kong)), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It is indeed my greatest pleasure to join you here at the opening concert of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for its 2015/16 season.

As Asia's leading orchestra, the HK Phil endeavours to deliver performances of the highest artistic standard, offering music lovers a raft of fantastic music programmes every year. The HK Phil is committed to enriching the cultural life of music lovers in Hong Kong through its extensive and diversified education programmes and community concerts. Moreover, the HK Phil also acts as our cultural ambassador. Concerts staged by the orchestra outside Hong Kong have been highly acclaimed by both audiences and music critics. I would like to take this opportunity to convey my heartiest congratulations to the HK Phil on its remarkable accomplishments.

The Special Administrative Region Government is committed to promoting the long-term development of arts and culture in Hong Kong and has been providing funding for the nine major performing arts groups, including the HK Phil. We are glad to note that the orchestra also receives strong support from the business community. We hope that with support from the Government, business sector and music lovers, the HK Phil will continue to scale new heights in the years to come, becoming one of the top symphonic orchestras in the world.

As Chairman of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the HK Phil for staging three open air concerts at the Nursery Park of West Kowloon Cultural District in late 2015 and early 2016. I am sure they will bring a most enjoyable experience to the audience in a new setting.

Lastly, may I wish this concert a resounding success and all of you a very enjoyable evening.
