Company fined for late payment of wages
***************************************

Tom Ip & Partners, Architects, Engineers & Development Consultants Limited was fined $60,000 in total for wage offences under the Employment Ordinance (EO) at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (August 28).

The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department. The company failed to pay wages, amounting to a total of about $66,000, to an employee within seven days after the expiry of wage periods.

"The judgment helps disseminate a strong message to all employers that they have to pay wages to employees in accordance with the EO. Any employer who wilfully and without reasonable excuse fails to pay wages to an employee when it becomes due is liable to prosecution and, upon conviction, to a fine of $350,000 and imprisonment for three years," a spokesman for the Labour Department said.

"The Labour Department does not tolerate the above offences and will spare no effort in enforcing the law and protecting employees' statutory rights," the spokesman added.
