Research Grants Council public lecture on parent child relationship/education in Hong Kong to be held on September 12
************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:

The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present the third public lecture of this year, under the theme "Parent Child Relationship/Education in Hong Kong" on September 12 (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Central Library.

The RGC has invited Associate Professor of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong, Dr Sandra Tsang, and Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Social Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong, Dr Sylvia Kwok, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. Details are as follows:

Time: 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Venue: G/F Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library
Language: Cantonese
Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

Many parents with young children invest time and money in learning to be quality parents. Given their busy schedule and tight budget, it is important to know how to pick quality programmes. Dr Tsang will give a lecture entitled "Effective Parenting: What matters in Quality Parent Education Programmes?", which will highlight key criteria for quality parent education programmes and cite examples of some locally developed evidence-based parent education programmes for illustration. Parents and professionals who provide services for children and their caregivers will benefit from learning about important elements of quality parent education, thus enabling them to choose programmes wisely.

Research findings show that autocratic parenting is related to child anxiety and depression, while positive parenting is conducive to a harmonious parent-child relationship and children's healthy development. Dr Kwok will deliver a talk entitled "Positive Parenting: Building a Harmonious Parent-child Relationship" to introduce how positive parenting helps to nurture and cultivate children's character strengths and enable them to live a flourishing life. The talk will also touch on how character strengths such as gratitude, hope, optimism, love, forgiveness and altruism can help children cope with adversity and challenges in life.

Since 2009, leading scholars in their respective fields have been invited by the RGC to deliver public lectures. These lectures aim at arousing public interest in local research development.
