Update on cluster of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Queen Mary Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) gave the following update today (August 21) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of inpatients confirmed as carriers of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) in a surgical ward:

     The hospital has stepped up the screening procedures and today confirmed two more male patients (aged 35 and 54) as MDRA carriers but without clinical symptoms. The patients are being treated under isolation with stable condition.

     QMH will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
