Territory-wide operation to promote safe driving

     Police yesterday (August 18) concluded a one-week territory-wide operation to remind drivers of goods vehicles  of the importance of safe driving.

     This was the latest in an ongoing series of operations conducted by the Police using enforcement to target moving traffic offences.

     The operation resulted in the issue of 54 verbal warnings, 43 summonses and 1,188 fixed penalty tickets.  Seven good vehicles were suspected of violating safety requirements of the Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations and were sent to a Motor Vehicle Examiner Centre for further investigation.

     Among the 1,231 summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 204 were issued for speeding, 193 for failing to comply with traffic signs, 172 for using hand-held mobile phone while driving, 157 were for seatbelt-related offences, 77 for overloading and 51 for failing to comply with traffic light signals.
