Queen Mary Hospital announces staff cases of hand, foot and mouth disease
************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) made the following announcement today (August 7) regarding two staff members confirmed as having hand, foot and mouth disease:

An accounting staff member and a clerk of the Private Clinic, located on 2/F of the Professorial Block of QMH, contracted hand, foot and mouth disease this week. After seeking medical consultation and confirmation of infection on August 4 and yesterday (August 6), they are now on leave.

The Clinic was informed of the cases yesterday evening and completed disinfection this morning, in addition to informing the Infection Control Team of the hospital.

According to the assessment of the Infection Control Team, the risk of infecting patients is comparatively low as the staff members have not been involved in clinical duties. As a precautionary measure, the Clinic has approached through telephone all the 80 patients who have attended the clinic this week, reminding them to watch out for symptoms and to contact the Clinic for further examination if in doubt.

QMH has reported the cases to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. Meanwhile, the hospital will closely monitor the health conditions of the staff of the Clinic.
