Transcript of remarks by SCS
****************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung, at a media session this morning (July 23):

Reporter: Secretary, what challenges did you have to handle and what are your concerns?

Secretary for the Civil Service: A new portfolio presents many challenges and I think the first priority of course is to make sure that all the ongoing projects will maintain the impetus and there are quite a few issues which remained to be resolved and I think one of the key priorities as reflected by the comments made by quite a few representatives of the trade unions is to enhance the dialogue and communication. There are certain selected topics that we might have to put on the table for more in-depth deliberations, but I think the primary task that I have is probably to strengthen and enhance the liaison mechanism with all the staff unions.

Reporter: Are you talking that you are doing a better job than Paul Tang?

Secretary for the Civil Service: I think Mr Tang has done a marvellous job. He has achieved many endeavours in his past three years. He has already elucidated very clearly the reasons for his departure from the current position and I think all I hope for is to make sure that I maintain the impetus on all the projects that he has already started, and on those projects where he has not yet charted a course, I have to perhaps put it under a bit of fire to make sure that an early resolution can be achieved.
