Regarding an earlier announcement on cases of mucormycosis infection in Queen Mary Hospital (QMH), the hospital spokesperson gave the following update today (July 22):
Infection control measures have been stepped up in response to the cases of mucormycosis infection. Starting from July 19, all linen items in high-risk wards were replaced with clean linens supplied from Chai Wan Laundry. Linen replacement will be continually arranged for the remaining wards in accordance with the risk level assessments.
A 72-year-old end-stage renal failure female patient returned to QMH to receive haemodialysis on July 18, a day before the linen replacement. As redness and discharge were found on the skin of the patient near the haemodialysis catheter, a swab was taken for fungal culture and mucormycosis infection was confirmed at noon today. Appropriate medication treatment has been prescribed and the patient is now in a stable condition. The attending doctor has explained to her the current situation.
