The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) today (July 17) announced that eight secondary schools have been selected as partner schools to provide intensive information technology (IT) enrichment training to Secondary Two to Six students for four cohorts from the 2015/16 school year to the 2022/23 school year.
The eight schools are:
1. Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School
2. Christian Alliance S W Chan Memorial College
3. Pak Kau College
4. Pui Ching Middle School
5. Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College
6. St Paul's Convent School
7. The YWCA Hioe Tjo Yoeng College
8. Tin Ka Ping Secondary School
"In the 2014-15 Budget, the Financial Secretary proposed to incorporate enrichment programmes in secondary schools which are outstanding in IT education to cultivate young IT professionals and even entrepreneurs to meet the development needs of a digital society. A total of $75 million has been allocated to implement on a pilot basis the Enriched IT Programme in Secondary Schools," a spokesman for the OGCIO said.
The Programme comprises two parts:
(a) Enriched IT Class Programme - enriched IT classes to be run by eight selected secondary schools to provide intensive IT training to students who are interested and talented in IT; and
(b) Enriched IT Activities Programme - enriched IT activities to be organised by secondary schools to foster a pro-IT atmosphere and stimulate interest in IT in the school community.
"The eight partner schools will start running enriched IT classes at Secondary Two in the 2015/16 school year and two of them, namely Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College and Pui Ching Middle School, will start enriched IT classes at Secondary Four as well.
"We are now working with the partner schools on arrangements, such as student recruitment and finalising the curriculum, to start enriched IT classes in September this year," the spokesman added.
In February 2015, government-funded secondary schools adopting the local curriculum were invited to submit proposals to run enriched IT classes. Twenty-five proposals were received and eight schools were selected by a selection panel comprising representatives from the OGCIO, the Education Bureau and the Curriculum Development Council.
For the Enriched IT Activities Programme, invitation for proposals will be issued in the latter half of 2015 to invite interested secondary schools to organise some 30 IT activities in the 2015/16 school year.
