CHP investigates suspected poisoning case after consumption of medicinal plants
************************************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 16) investigating a suspected case of poisoning affecting a family of three persons after consumption of soup containing Radix Fici Simplicissimae, and appealed to members of the public not to collect, buy or consume medicinal plants of unknown origin.

The case involves two males and one female aged 11 to 62. The trio consumed self-prepared soup containing Radix Fici Simplicissimae at home in the evening of July 14 and developed dizziness and nausea 30 to 60 minutes after consumption. They attended the Accident and Emergency Department of United Christian Hospital and were discharged yesterday (July 15) in stable condition after management.

Their urine samples and the soup remnants have been sent for laboratory testing by the hospital.

Initial investigations revealed that the family had bought the Radix Fici Simplicissimae concerned in the Mainland. The CHP's investigations are ongoing.

"Radix Fici Simplicissimae is not toxic, but resembles some toxic plants, such as Gelsemium elegans, and it can be mixed up with these substances," a spokesman for the CHP explained.

"Members of the public should purchase medicinal plants from licensed shops with a good reputation. If they feel unwell after consumption, they should seek advice from healthcare professionals immediately," the spokesman advised.
