Membership of task force to investigate cause of excessive lead content in drinking water announced

     The Government announced today (July 15) the membership of the task force to investigate the cause of excessive lead content in drinking water found recently at public housing estates.

     The task force is chaired by the Deputy Director of Water Supplies. Members include Dr Chan Hon-fai, Professor Tony Shing, Dr George Greene and experts from relevant government departments.

     Dr Chan is the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Water Resources and Quality of Water Supplies. He is a veteran environmental management expert with over 28 years' experience in environmental management and handling of projects relating to water quality and contamination.

     Professor Shing is the Professor of the Department of Chemistry of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Chairman of the Royal Society of Chemistry (Hong Kong Section). He was the Chairman of the Department of Chemistry of the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2011 to 2014. He has won many awards in the field of Chemistry.

     Dr Greene was the Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Hong Kong before retirement. He is a veteran expert in materials and corrosion of metals. Since 1983, Dr Greene has provided expert advice on water supply system failure incidents and fittings corrosion cases.

     The task force, with a broad-based composition from various expert fields, will carry out investigations to ascertain the causes of high lead content found in drinking water at public housing estates. It will recommend measures to prevent recurrence of similar incidents in future. It will also follow up on a recent case of Legionnaires' disease found at Kai Ching Estate.

     The membership of the Task Force is as follows:
