Hong Kong Customs detected a suspected smuggling case at Shenzhen Bay Control Point yesterday (July 14) and seized a total of 1 919 central processing units (CPUs) worth about $1.72 million.
Customs officers intercepted an outgoing coach for inspection yesterday and found the batch of CPUs concealed and stablised by magnets underneath the seat pads of passenger seats on the coach. The 50-year-old male driver was arrested and charged with attempting to export unmanifested cargo. He will appear at Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (July 16).
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
