**********************************************************

Five secondary students representing Hong Kong at the 46th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in India have obtained altogether three gold medals and two silver medals, the most outstanding results since 2011. This Hong Kong team had achieved the city's best ever results at the Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) early this year.

One of the gold medallists was Secondary Five student Wong Yat, from GT (Ellen Yeung) College and the youngest in the team. He had also won a gold medal in the APhO 2015. The other two gold medallists were Secondary Six student Lui Ching-yin from Queen's College and Secondary Four student Frankie Lam from Diocesan Boys' School. The silver medallists were Secondary Five student Wong Yuk from Diocesan Boys' School and Secondary Four student Tai Wai-ting from Queen Elizabeth School.

A spokesman for the Education Bureau (EDB) said today (July 14), "This year's good results reflect the success of collaboration among the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong Baptist University and the EDB.

"All student contestants to the IPhO have been selected from the outstanding performers in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad. They have attended enhancement programmes in physics at universities, commissioned by the HKAGE, before attending the IPhO. Their participation in the competition has been funded by the EDB."

This year's IPhO was held from July 5 and 12 in Mumbai, India, with around 380 contestants from 84 countries/regions. The IPhO aims to promote education in physics, strengthen interaction and co-operation among experts in physics worldwide, and train and inspire teenagers who possess enormous potential in physics.

The spokesman said, "The Department of Physics of HKUST will host the APhO in Hong Kong in May 2016. We call upon schools to fully support this great event and actively participate in the related activities. Details are available at the designated Facebook page of the Organising Committee of the 2016 Asian Physics Olympiad in Hong Kong (www.facebook.com/apho2016)."
