The 2015 internship programme organised by the Legislative Council Secretariat (the Secretariat) for local tertiary students was concluded today (July 10).
A total of 23 students participating in the six-week programme received a certificate of participation from Secretary General of the Secretariat, Mr Kenneth Chen, at today's closing ceremony. Student representatives also gave a sharing on their experience gained.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Chen said, "I am pleased to note that this year's internship programme is the largest and longest so far. Interns spent time with Members and senior Secretariat staff, from whom they have learned much about the work of the Secretariat. More importantly, I hope they will take away from this experience an appreciation of the Secretariat's commitment to provide quality service as well as professional and independent advice to all Legislative Council (LegCo) Members."
"The programme has not only provided me with direct experience in meeting the professional team of the Secretariat, but also gave me a better understanding of the functions and operation of LegCo," a student said.
"The discussions with Members of LegCo have offered me opportunities to appreciate how they represent different interests of their constituencies and their contributions made to the betterment of society," another student said.
During the internship, from June 1 to today, in addition to attaching to various divisions of the Secretariat, the students met with the President of LegCo, some 20 Members of LegCo and Heads of Divisions of the Secretariat. They also observed meetings of LegCo and its committees as well as experienced the passage of a bill in a mock Council debate.
First launched by the Secretariat in 2013, the internship programme is held annually during the summer vacation of students.
