CE commends teachers for teaching excellence (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence Steering Committee:

     The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (July 10) presented the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (CEATE) (2014/2015) to 16 school teachers at an award presentation ceremony held at the Central Government Offices. The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, presented the Certificate of Merit to 35 teachers.

     Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the CEATE Steering Committee, Mr Duffy Wong, said, "The awarded teachers have designed interesting and challenging language activities which have effectively enhanced students' language skills. They have also used enlightening learning activities to help students develop independent thinking and moral principles, as well as positive values and attitudes."

     Mr Wong said that since the launch of CEATE in 2003, more than 750 teachers from different subjects have been awarded and the award has won community-wide recognition. He said he hoped that the awarded teachers would use their enthusiasm for teaching to influence their fellow teachers through dissemination activities to strive for excellence with a view to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching. He also hoped that CEATE would pool more accomplished teachers together to raise the bar of our teaching profession to new heights.

     This year's CEATE covered three themes, namely Chinese Language Education Key Learning Area, English Language Education Key Learning Area and Moral and Civic Education. Assessment of nominations focused on teachers' performance in the four domains of professional competence, student development, professionalism and commitment to the community, and school development. A total of 134 nominations were received. Six nominations (comprising 16 teachers) were selected for the Award for Teaching Excellence while 11 nominations (comprising 35 teachers) were presented with the Certificate of Merit. The assessment results are available on the CEATE website (www.ate.gov.hk).

     Officiating guests at today's ceremony also included the Permanent Secretary for Education, Mrs Marion Lai; the Chairman of the Education Commission, Mr Tim Lui; the Chairperson of the Committee on Professional Development of Teachers and Principals and the Chairman of the High-level Advisory Panel of the CEATE (2014/2015), Dr Carrie Willis; the Chairman of the Curriculum Development Council, Professor Kenneth Young; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, Mr Rock Chen; and the Chairman of the CEATE Assessment Working Group (2014/2015), Professor Horace Ip.

     Sharing activities on excellent teaching practices of CEATE (2014/2015) will be rolled out in the coming school year. Details will be announced on the CEATE website.

     Nominations for CEATE (2015/2016) will be accepted from July 13 to October 2. It will cover Curriculum Leadership, Mathematics Education Key Learning Area and Special Educational Needs. Related details will be uploaded to the CEATE website on July 13.
