Hongkong Post and the Education Bureau co-organised a letter writing competition for young people in Hong Kong in support of World Post Day in 2015 and the Universal Postal Union's 44th International Letter-Writing Competition. Hongkong Post today (June 30) announced the results of the competition and held an award presentation ceremony.
The theme for the competition was "Tell us about the world you want to grow up in". Through the competition, the organiser aims to promote young people's interest in expressing their feelings and sharing their experience as well as their visions of an ideal world through letter writing.
The competition received an overwhelming response, with over 6 000 entries from more than 200 participating schools. Hongkong Post held the award presentation ceremony today at the General Post Office. The Assistant Postmaster General (Business Development) of Hongkong Post, Ms Estella Chow, and the Senior Curriculum Development Officer of Education Bureau, Miss Yvonne Lam, presented awards to the winners.
The panel of judges, which was chaired by Professor Si Chung-mou of the Department of Chinese Language Studies of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, included representatives from the Education Bureau and Hongkong Post. Professor Si said, "With the theme of an ideal world, young people can unleash their creativity and imagination. Submissions are of very high standard. While expressing their inner thoughts, students also revealed current social issues through describing the ideal world in their minds. It is obvious that young people are very concerned about society."
The competition champion was Chung Ka-yi from Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wha San Secondary School. "I never thought of winning the championship. I am very glad that the ideal world in my mind can win over the recognition of the judges. It is also my earnest wish to be able to grow up in a world which is full of love. I really enjoy putting my thoughts on paper and would like to thank Hongkong Post and the Education Bureau for giving us, the young people, this opportunity," she said after receiving the award.
Postal services are not only closely related to our daily lives but also contribute to social and economic development. Established by the Universal Postal Union, World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 every year to raise awareness of postal services among people in every corner of the world. In support of World Post Day, Hongkong Post designates October 9 every year as "Love Post Day". On that day, Hong Kong people can send a personal letter to a local recipient and drop their letters free of charge in special collection boxes placed in all post offices (including mobile post offices). The letters will be delivered on the following day. Hongkong Post will continue to organise the activity this year.
Moreover, Hongkong Post will release a set of four stamps on the theme of World Post Day on October 9 this year. At the heart of the stamp design are flying pigeons which are formed by crossed hands, to highlight sending personal message through letters.
