The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (June 27) officiated at the opening ceremony of the large-scale anti-drug event "Anti-drug Alliance 2015", raising the curtain on this year's territory-wide campaign against youth drug abuse.

In support of the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, the Narcotics Division of the Security Bureau (ND), the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), co-held the event at the MacPherson Stadium in Mong Kok today to rally community support for the anti-drug cause.

The event, namely the "Anti-drug Alliance 2015", seeks to encourage the community at large to join the fight against drugs, calling for continued concerted efforts of various sectors of the community in fighting drug abuse. More than 1 400 youths, members of the community and various organisations including the Junior Police Call, uniformed groups, non-governmental organisations, social services groups, education sector and artistes attended the event to pledge their commitment to fighting drugs.

At the event, young people demonstrated the vigour of a drug-free life with marvellous dance and cheerleading performances.

Artistes Andy Hui, Jay Fung, Tat Dik and the band ZolarWind also performed. They encouraged youngsters to participate in healthy and meaningful activities, to develop a positive outlook on life and stay away from drugs. DJs also played interactive games with participants to enhance their drug awareness.

A new TV Announcement in the Public Interest (API) was premiered at the event. To address the problem of hidden drug abuse, the API has been produced to encourage people with drug problems to seek help as soon as possible. The API carries the message that they can live a healthy life again if they are determined to quit drugs. The TV and the corresponding radio APIs will be broadcast on TV and radio from tonight.

After the launch of the territory-wide campaign today, a series of anti-drug publicity programmes will be rolled out. To complement the new TV and radio APIs and posters, anti-drug advertisements will be shown and displayed on public transportation networks and at entertainment venues, as well as on the Internet and social media networks. Giant wall banners will also be mounted on government buildings.

Furthermore, the ND and ACAN will collaborate with various radio stations and organisations to produce radio programmes and a micro film, and organise healthy activities including a street-run training programme to enhance young people's resilience against drugs by encouraging them to pursue a positive and healthy lifestyle as well as to encourage drug abusers to seek help at the earliest opportunity. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Drug InfoCentre will also organise various activities during the summer holidays, including an anti-drug fun day and parent talks to promote awareness of the drug problem among youngsters and parents.

Other guests at today's event included the Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok; the Permanent Secretary for Security, Mr Joshua Law; the Under Secretary for Security, Mr John Lee; the Chairman of the ACAN Sub-committee on Preventive Education and Publicity, Dr Tik Chi-yuen; the Chairman of the ACAN Sub-committee on Treatment and Rehabilitation, Dr Susan Fan; the Convenor of the Research Advisory Group, Professor Cheung Yuet-wah; the Commissioner for Narcotics, Mrs Erika Hui, and the Controller (Radio) of RTHK, Mr Chan Yiu-wah.
