Police appeal to public meeting participants to express views peacefully and lawfully
********************************************************

The public events outside the Legislative Council Complex were generally conducted in an orderly manner today (June 17). Most of the participants exercised restraint and expressed their views peacefully and rationally. However, there were rebukes and scuffles between a small number of participants. They were later separated by Police officers, security staff and marshals of organisers who put the situation under control and maintained order at scene.

Meanwhile, Police arrested a 17-year-old man on a footbridge on Tim Mei Avenue for possession of offensive weapons. The case is being investigated by District Investigation Team of Central District. In the evening, a 46-year-old woman was arrested in Tamar Park for criminal damage. Investigation by District Investigation Team of Western District is underway.

With a view to ensuring public safety and public order, Police will deploy sufficient manpower and make necessary arrangement according to the situation so that the public events can be conducted in a safe and peaceful environment.

Police remind participants of the public events to comply with the law and express their views in a peaceful and rational manner. Police also appeal to them not to commit any violent acts.  Should there be any confrontation, they should protect their own safety, maintain a safe distance from the violent protestors or leave the scene at once so as to give Police enough space to deal with any violent and unlawful acts. If the public spot any suspicious persons or objects, they should inform Police under safety circumstances.
