Two men fined for illegal club operation
****************************************

Two men were fined $12,000 to $16,000 at the Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts today (June 17) for contravening the Clubs (Safety of Premises) Ordinance.

The courts heard that in November last year, officers of the Office of the Licensing Authority (OLA) of the Home Affairs Department conducted inspections at a club on Dundas Street in Yau Ma Tei, which had been operating with a certificate of compliance (CoC).

During the inspection, OLA officers found that the club had a layout that deviated from the registered drawings and the exit route had been obstructed. The club staff also failed to show the registered drawings and the membership register upon the OLA officers' request. Conditions 3, 9, 17 and 20 of the CoC were breached.

The two men, being the manager and the CoC holder of the club respectively, were charged with contravening sections 21(1)(a) or 21(2) of the Ordinance.

A spokesman for the department reminded all CoC holders to comply with the conditions as stipulated therein. Enforcement action would continue to be taken against illegal club operations.
