Hong Kong emission inventory for 2013 published
***********************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) today (June 16) published the 2013 Emission Inventory for Hong Kong.

Every year, the EPD compiles an emission inventory for six key air pollutants from different sources including power plants, vessels, motor vehicles, aviation and other fuel combustion sources. The six pollutants are sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), respirable suspended particulates (RSP or PM10), fine suspended particulates (FSP or PM2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and carbon monoxide (CO).

Hong Kong's total emissions in 2013 were 31 280 tonnes of SO2, 113 220 tonnes of NOx, 6 040 tonnes of RSP, 4 740 tonnes of FSP, 29 420 tonnes of VOC and 60 790 tonnes of CO.  Compared to 2012, the levels of the six pollutants in 2013 were between 1 and 11 per cent lower, mainly due to a reduction in emissions from vessels and motor vehicles.

Details of the 2013 emission inventory and the 2013 emission report can be found on the EPD website: www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/environmentinhk/air/data/emission_inve.html.
