Police-public co-operation crucial for maintaining law and order (with photos)
***********************************************************

Hong Kong is renowned for its favourable law and order situation, and it is attributed to the effective law enforcement as well as public co-operation and support to the Police, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lo Wai-chung, said today (June 13) when inspecting a passing-out parade at the Hong Kong Police College.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr Lo noted that frontline officers had contact with the public every day, and he hoped that they would put community policing into practice by taking the initiative in helping the people and collaborating with the community in fighting crimes.

ˇ§Apart from fostering Police-public co-operation, I hope you will care about the community like your family, and strengthen communication with the citizens to boost mutual trust and respect so that Police and the public will come to see each other as family members,ˇ¨ Mr Lo said.

He said that rapid development in the society has made policing work more complicated, Police missions of upholding the rule of law and fighting crime, however, have remained unchanged. When facing different voices and views, Police officers should exercise their powers and enforce the law in a fair, just and impartial manner, bringing criminals to justice in order to maintain the prosperity of the society.

He reminded graduates that even they would face myriads of challenges in the future, they can overcome the difficulties if they all stay and work together. He said: ˇ§With team spirit the Police Force has changed through time and become a distinguished and quality police service over the past 170 years.ˇ¨ Over the years, crime rates continued to drop. Last year, the number of violence cases and crime rates hit a new low since 1970s.

Mr Lo hoped that with passion and courage, along with the Police Forceˇ¦s motto of ˇ§We serve with pride and careˇ¨, graduates would strive to make Hong Kong one of the safest and most stable societies in the world.

A total of 54 probationary inspectors and 223 recruit constables passed out today.
