Update on latest MERS situation
*******************************

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (June 4) closely monitoring five additional cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) reported by Korea.

     According to the health authority of Korea, they are:

* Two visitors of in-patients and one health-care worker in the same hospital ward as the first case from May 15 to 17;
* One in-patient at another hospital in the same ward as another confirmed case from May 28 to 30; and
* One doctor who treated another confirmed case on May 27 in another hospital.

     To date, 34 MERS cases have been reported by Korea. In addition, another case was exported from Korea to Mainland China.

     "In view of the evolving MERS situation in Korea, we again strongly advise the public to avoid unnecessary visits to all health-care facilities in Korea, and avoid participating in medical exchange activities in Korea," a spokesman for the CHP said.

     "We will maintain close communication with the World Health Organization and the health authority of Korea. Members of the public and the health-care sector should heighten vigilance and stay alert to the latest situation," the spokesman said.
