The 2015 internship programme organised by the Legislative Council Secretariat (the Secretariat) for local tertiary students commenced today (June 1) to provide training opportunities for students to acquire hands-on experience in the support services for the Legislative Council (LegCo) provided by the Secretariat.
To mark the commencement of this year's programme, an orientation session was organised this morning. Secretary General of the Secretariat, Mr Kenneth Chen, introduced the work of the Secretariat to the students. "During the six-week internship, students are encouraged to seize every training opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the wide range of support services provided to LegCo by the Secretariat. Students will also hold discussions with Members on topics relating to the work of LegCo and social issues, with a view to broadening exposure and acquiring knowledge about LegCo," he said.
A total of 23 students, including 15 undergraduate students and eight sub-degree students, nominated by 15 tertiary institutions participated in this year's programme.
"I look forward to the experience as an intern of the Secretariat and shall take full advantage of the opportunities to get to know the Secretariat. Learning about the operation of LegCo will surely supplement my study and help my career planning," a student said after the orientation session.
During the internship, from today to July 10, 2015, in addition to attaching to various divisions of the Secretariat to closely follow the day-to-day work of the Secretariat, the students will meet with the President and Members of LegCo, and observe meetings of LegCo and its committees. Students will also take part in a mock Council debate by playing the role of Members to experience the passage of a bill.
First launched by the Secretariat in 2013, the internship programme is held annually by the Secretariat during the summer vacation of students.
