5th Hong Kong Games concludes successfully (with photos)

    The 5th Hong Kong Games (HKG) concluded successfully today (May 31) after a series of exhilarating contests.

    The 5th HKG was held from April 25 to May 31, attracting more than 3 200 athletes from the 18 districts they live in to strive for honour in over 1 000 contests in eight sports - athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

    Speaking at the HKG's Closing cum Prize Presentation Ceremony held at Kowloon Park Sports Centre this afternoon, the Acting Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, said she believes that the passion for sports is rooted in the community. The spirit of "Our City, Our Games" will continue to grow and intensify. With the joint effort of local organisations and the sports sector, the Government will keep promoting "Sport for All" proactively and engaging the public in various sports activities.

    Also officiating at the ceremony were Legislative Councillor Mr Ip Kwok-him; the President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, Mr Timothy Fok; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the Chairman of the 5th HKG Organising Committee, Mr William Tong; and the Executive Adviser of the 5th HKG Organising Committee, Mr Chau How-chen.

    At today's ceremony, the hard work of the winning athletes and teams was fully recognised. The 5th HKG overall championship went to Yuen Long District, which achieved the highest total score of the eight sports competitions. Sha Tin District was the overall first runner-up, while Wong Tai Sin District was the overall second runner-up.

    The champions for individual competition events were Yuen Long District (athletics), Kowloon City District (badminton), Kwun Tong District (basketball), Eastern District (futsal), Eastern District (swimming), Central and Western District (table tennis), Sha Tin District (tennis) and Yuen Long District (volleyball).

    Prizes to encourage district participation were also presented to winning districts today. The winning districts were Yuen Long District and Sha Tin District (District with the Most Gold Medals), Wong Tai Sin District (District with the Best Progress), Yuen Long District (District with the Greatest Participation) and Kowloon City District (District with the Strongest Cheering Squad). The winners of the newly introduced District with Impressive Progress award for individual competition events were Wong Tai Sin District (athletics), Tai Po District (badminton), Wong Tai Sin District (basketball), Tuen Mun District (futsal), Sham Shui Po District (swimming), Central and Western District and Sai Kung District (table tennis), Tsuen Wan District (tennis) and Kwun Tong District and Wong Tai Sin District (volleyball). District with the Best Sportsmanship awards went to Yuen Long District, Wong Tai Sin District and Tsuen Wan District.

    More than 400 000 people took part in various community involvement activities held during the Games' period, including the opening ceremony, a cheering team competition, a photo contest, voting and guessing activities and more. Individual winners and winning teams for some of these activities were announced at today's ceremony.

    In the Cheering Team Competition for the 18 Districts, Yuen Long District was the champion of the Best Performance Award and the Best Local Characteristics Award. The first runner-up and the second runner-up of these two awards were Islands District and Yau Tsim Mong District respectively. Yuen Long District won the Highest Popularity Award.

    Central and Western District and Sham Shui Po District were voted as My Favourite Sporty District online and through paper votes respectively. The guessing of the Overall Champion of the 5th HKG activity drew the participation of more than 110 000 people. A lucky draw for winners for both activities was held after the ceremony today. The winner list will be uploaded to the 5th HKG website (www.hongkonggames.hk) and published in Sing Tao Daily and the Standard on June 9.

    The submission deadline for the Dynamic Moments Photo Contest is June 8. The results will be announced in mid-July.

    With the 5th HKG completed successfully, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will continue to organise various sport events and physical activities in the community to engage the public to exercise actively. The next large-scale sports event, Sport for All Day, will be held on August 2. Free programmes at designated sports centres and free use of some major leisure facilities throughout the 18 districts will be arranged for the public to take part in to stay active and healthy. Announcement of the details will be made in due course.
