To upgrade the standard of the local recycling industry, Hong Kong Baptist University's Sino-Forest Applied Research Centre for Pearl River Delta Environment held the "International Conference on Solid Waste 2015 - Recyclers Forum: Sustainable Development of Hong Kong Recycling Industry" at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre this afternoon (May 21).

Officiating at the forum, the Permanent Secretary for the Environment/Director of Environmental Protection, Ms Anissa Wong, said that she hoped the forum could provide a platform for recycling stakeholders to share the latest information on the recycling system, relevant technologies and operational modes in different cities, and to promote the mutual exchange of experience among local recyclers.

Ms Wong also said that with the establishment of the Steering Committee to Promote Sustainable Development of the Recycling Industry, relevant bureaux and departments have stepped up their efforts to promote the development of local recycling through various means including the establishment of the Recycling Fund and a registration scheme, the provision of training programmes for the recycling workforce, promotion of green procurement, as well as providing infrastructure and land support. She also expressed her gratitude to local recyclers for their contribution to the development of Hong Kong's recycling industry.

At today's forum, recycling experts from the United States, the Netherlands, Taiwan, the Mainland and Hong Kong shared their practical experience in starting and sustaining their recycling businesses. Participants also had an in-depth discussion on the current operation of and outlook for the local recycling industry, and supporting measures for its sustainable development.
