Local sheng virtuoso Cheng Ho-kwan to give concert "In love with Sheng"
************************************************************

Talented local sheng virtuoso Cheng Ho-kwan will give his first solo concert as a professional artist in June. Cheng expects the concert to be a gratifying experience in which he can share with the audience the road he has taken with his companion in music, the sheng.

The selections for the programme tell of the people and events the performer encountered and was touched by during his study of the instrument. The programme will feature well-known classics from the sheng repertoire such as "The Phoenix Spreads its Wings", "Song of the Homebound Fishermen", "Song of the Axi Tribe", "Song of Spring on the Xiang River", "Zen" and "Let's Snap" from the repertoire of Nanyang-inspired music, and a brand new commissioned work, "La neige de temps".

Cheng Ho-kwan graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, having majored in sheng under Cheng Tak-wai and with a minor in Chinese percussion under Yim Hok-man. He also benefited from the coaching of noted sheng virtuosi Hu Tianquan, Weng Zhenfa and Loo Sze-wang. While at the Academy, he won numerous competition awards and scholarships.

As the sheng principal of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra between 2009 and 2014, Cheng was featured as soloist or lead player in many of its concerts and on overseas tours. In 2012, he was chosen as one of the "Young Music Makers" by RTHK Radio 4, and participated in concert programmes and recordings. From 2010 to 2014, Cheng was awarded in four of the Academy Concerto Competitions, and he performed sheng concertos with the Academy Symphony Orchestra.

Cheng is currently a sheng musician with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. Over the years, he has also been an active figure on the music scene. He has gone on performance tours with various Chinese orchestras to Beijing, Shanghai, Yunnan, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore and many countries in Europe.
