************************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (May 15) the May 2015 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains three feature articles entitled "The Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors in Hong Kong", "The Profile of the Unemployed Population in Hong Kong in 2014" and "Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2013/14". Statistics presented in the "Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2013/14" article are based on the data source from the Planning Department.

"The Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors in Hong Kong"

This feature article presents the principal operating characteristics of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors of Hong Kong in 2013, and analyses the business situation of these sectors by making reference to selected industry averages and analytical ratios derived from the statistics on their operating characteristics. It also attempts to gauge the more recent business performance of the retail trade and food services sectors with reference to the results of related monthly and quarterly surveys in 2014.

"The Profile of the Unemployed Population in Hong Kong in 2014"

The labour market remained generally tight in 2014. With the strong labour demand, the number of employed persons increased from 3 714 800 in the first quarter (Q1) of 2014 to 3 797 200 in the fourth quarter (Q4). The size of the labour force also increased from 3 833 900 in Q1 2014 to 3 919 400 in Q4 2014. Because the growth of employed persons was slower than that of labour force, the number of unemployed persons increased from 119 100 in Q1 2014 to 122 100 in Q4 2014. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 3.1% in Q1 2014 to 3.3% in both the third quarter and Q4 of 2014. This feature article provides an analysis of the unemployed population in 2014 from various perspectives. It aims to give readers a better understanding about the unemployed population in Hong Kong.

"Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2013/14"

The socio-economic ties between Hong Kong, the mainland of China and Macao are growing stronger, leading to tremendous growth in cross-boundary travel over the years. This feature article briefly describes the characteristics of cross-boundary passenger and vehicle trips, based on the data obtained from the Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2013/14 conducted by the Planning Department during February to March 2014.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Cross-boundary Infrastructure and Development Section, Planning Department (Tel: 2231 4707).
