LCSD museums to offer free admission in support of International Museum Day

     During International Museum Day 2015, Hong Kong (IMD 2015) which will be held on May 16 and 17 (Saturday and Sunday), a total of 43 participating local cultural institutes including the museums under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will offer free admission to the public.

     The theme of IMD 2015 is "Museums for a sustainable society", which seeks to convey the message that museums play a key role in promoting a sustainable society as well as performing functions such as acquisition of artefacts, research, exhibition and education.

     The 43 participating local cultural institutes comprise the LCSD's museums including Hong Kong Museum of History and its branches, Hong Kong Museum of Art and its branches, Hong Kong Heritage Museum and its branches, Hong Kong Science Museum, Hong Kong Space Museum, Hong Kong Film Archive, Central Conservation Section, Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre, Ping Shan Tang Clan Gallery, Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre and Oi!; as well as Museum of Ethnology, Tung Wah Museum, Po Leung Kuk Museum, University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong, Stephen Hui Geological Museum of The University of Hong Kong, Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Dr and Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine at Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Museum of Education, City Gallery, Hong Kong Racing Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum, Lions Nature Education Centre, Tao Heung Museum of Food Culture, Police Museum, Hong Kong Jockey Club Drug InfoCentre, Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Jao Tsung-I Academy, Hong Kong Maritime Museum, HKDI Gallery, Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change, kaitak - Centre for Research and Development in Visual Arts, and Heritage of Mei Ho House.

     Special exhibitions are currently being staged at the LCSD's museums. Examples include "The Past is Continuing" and "Bring Me Home - the Story of Hong Kong Culture, Art & Design" at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum; "The Wonders of Bamboo: Chinese Bamboo Carving Donated by Dr Ip Yee" at the Hong Kong Museum of Art and "With the Passage of Time ¡V Artefacts of Sun Wan, Dr Sun Yat-sen's Second Daughter, and her Husband, Tai Ensai" at the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum. In addition, a variety of interesting activities and educational programmes will be held by the participating museums and venues.

     Admission to most of the participating institutes will be free of charge on May 16 and 17, except for the Stanley Ho Space Theatre of the Hong Kong Space Museum and film programmes at the Cinema of the Hong Kong Film Archive. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Drug InfoCentre will be closed on May 17.

     In 1977 the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated May 18 of each year as International Museum Day. Since 2001, the LCSD has annually organised IMD, HK in mid-May with the aim of raising public awareness of the roles and functions of museums in society.
