Lecture series to give overview of growth and development of 20th century Chinese dance
************************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold a lecture series on Chinese dance entitled "Genesis - A Guided Appreciation Series on 20th Century Chinese Dance Classics", to be held from June to August with veteran dance teacher Chung Ching as the speaker.

The 20th century was a period of great diversity and vibrancy in China's dance scene. Many distinguished dancers, choreographers and researchers emerged in the short span of a few decades and their dance works were internationally acclaimed. It was a tremendous achievement.

"Genesis" will tell the story of the conception, birth and growth of new Chinese dance. The series will proceed under four headings: "Born out of Chaos", "Hopes of Eden", "Fruits of Experimentation" and "Spring Breeze under the Tree". The series will look at 32 famous dances of different 20th century eras. Through presentation of the creative rationale behind the dances, participants will not only gain an overview of the growth and development of 20th century Chinese dance, they will also be able to enhance their critical abilities and aesthetic perspectives towards dance.

Chung Ching has been teaching dance for 20 years. She holds a Master of Literature degree in Dance History from the Chinese National Academy of Art and a Masters degree in Cultural Studies from Lingnan University. She is currently an Examiner (Dance) of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association, Director of the Hong Kong Performing Arts Center, and founder and Director of the Hong Kong Contemporary Youth Dancers. Over the years, she has been invited to give talks on Chinese dance culture and dance workshops. Since 1995, Chung has been a lecturer and instructor of dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and other tertiary institutions. She was also invited to be an adjudicator in dance competitions all over Hong Kong, and has represented Hong Kong on touring performances of dance in the US, the UK and other countries.
